House Charities
Becket House sponsor three classes at Luansobe Upper Basic School in Zambia through the Kaloko Trust, www.kalokotrust.org. Approximately half of these children have lost one or two parents to the AIDS virus and desperately need the stability of school life. They live in mud huts with no electricity and they need to fetch water from wells up to 2km away. The children have to help in the community during the rainy season (Nov – April) by cultivating the fields besides doing their studies. They spend their free time playing football and netball using plastic bags tied up to make a ball. Last year we sent £600 which continued to support 3 classes but also helped fund a new well as well as providing food and other materials to support the pupils.
Becket House also supports the ‘Help the Needy Community School’ for children orphaned in the recent civil war in Sierra Leone. The children are looked after by families within the community. The school is situated in a very deprived area of the capital, Freetown and offers a very basic education to 120 children. Dr Bright is our contact here. Last year we sent £600 which is being used to set up a kitchen to provide the children with one good meal each day. Our continued financial support offers a glimmer of hope to these victims of war. Thank you.

More House Fashion Show: We won again this year with Mrs Borwood and sixth former, Katie Sims, as very convincing Marge Simpson from 'The Simpsons' and 'Stewie' from 'Family Guy'. Well done girls!
House Music Competition: This took place for the first time in 2010. Each house performs two musical items - one instrumental and one vocal. Read a report here.
House Treasure Hunt: Run by Becket in September, helps Year 7 students to get to know the school with their house 'aunties'.
Becket 'Magic Carpet': Girls collect coins during the year and lay them out to make a shiny carpet to bring some 'magic' to the children in Zambia. Over £400 was collected this year. Read a report
here.
Sports Day: Our enthusiastic cheerleaders entertaining the crowds on sports day and doing a superb job of supporting BECKET HOUSE!
Easter Egg Tombola: Always popular! Read
last year's report.
Hot Chocolate Sales: These are very popular with cream, marshmallows AND flakes and raised £235 last year.
Pilgrimage to Canterbury: To revive an old Becket tradition, twelve staff and sixth form (mostly from Becket House!) followed the North Downs Way stopping at Box Hill, Aylesford Priory (singing in a mass!), stayed overnight in a youth hostel, attended a moving service in the cathedral and returned via Pooh Sticks Bridge. A spiritual and fun-filled weekend! Click here for
last year's report.
