Classical Civilisation - Lower School

In Year 9, some students study Classical Civilisation instead of Latin. The course aims to provide all students with both an introduction to the Classical World and an appreciation of its important legacy today.  It comprises seven units as follows:

  • The legend of Theseus and the Minotaur.  The palace at Knossos.
  • The fortress at Mycenae.
  • The Greek gods and heroes.
  • Homer, The Iliad.
  • Coursework topic: daily life in Ancient Greece.
  • Roman Sport and Entertainment.
  • Romano-British towns.

The Year 9 course is designed to give students a grounding for GCSE Classical Civilisation, but it should be noted that all students in Year 9 may take Classical Civilisation to GCSE level.
