At A level, the department follows the OCR specification. Latin A level comprises a combination of Latin Language and Literature.
AS Latin
Latin Language and Latin Literature
For Latin Language, candidates read a selection of prose authors and are assessed by unprepared translation.
For Latin Literature, candidates read selections from Ovid and Cicero, develop an understanding of literary techniques and have the opportunity to make a personal response to the texts.
A2 Latin
Latin Verse and Latin Prose
Texts at A2 level are studied at greater length and in greater depth. There are two sections to each paper; one on the prescribed text and the other an unprepared translation taken from a specified verse or prose author. The prescribed authors for verse have included Virgil, Juvenal and Catullus, while the prose authors have included Cicero, Livy and Tacitus.
