Latin is an optional subject at GCSE and pupils in Years 10 and 11 follow the OCR specification.
What is involved in GCSE Latin?
Language
We continue to use the Cambridge Latin Course for language work. This includes a wide range of new constructions, which explore the ways in which the Romans expressed their ideas. The cultural context of the stories moves from Roman Britain to the City of Rome itself with passages for both translation and comprehension. There are two Language Papers at GCSE, testing translation from Latin into English and comprehension of Latin stories from history and mythology.
Literature
The major development in Latin at GCSE is that we study selections of literature in the original language. These are taken from the works of major Roman authors such as Virgil, Ovid, Tacitus and Cicero. The literature studied may be verse or prose or a combination of the two. Questions will test knowledge, appreciation and understanding of the literature.
