Latin - Lower School

All pupils study Latin in Years 7 and 8, using the latest full-colour edition of the Cambridge Latin Course, together with the fantastic Cambridge School Classics Project eLearning Resource.

Book 1 follows the life of a family in Pompeii in the time leading up to the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD. Book 2 is set in the south of Roman Britain, near the palace of Fishbourne, and then in Alexandria, in Roman Egypt.

In Year 9, pupils are divided into three sets: Gratin, Latin and Classical Civilisation. Those in a Gratin or Latin continue with the Cambridge Latin Course, completing Book 2 and beginning Book 3, which is also set in Roman Britain. Pupils in a Gratin set also begin the study of Classical Greek, using John Taylor's Greek to GCSE and may then opt for Greek and Latin at GCSE.  Pupils in a Latin or Gratin set are able to opt for either Latin or Classical Civilisation (or both) at GCSE.

Those in a Classical Civilisation set pursue a non-linguistic course in Year 9.  Pupils in a Classical Civilisation set may opt for Classical Civilisation at GCSE, but not Latin or Greek.
