Critical Thinking is studied in the Lower Sixth at Farnborough Hill. We follow the OCR syllabus to AS Level – you can link to the specification here.
In 2011/12 the course will take place every Wednesday from 4.15-5.15 in S3.
Why study this subject?
Critical Thinking is a skills-based rather than content-based AS Level. It develops the ability to interpret, analyse and evaluate ideas and arguments and can support thinking skills in all subject areas, from arts and humanities to sciences. It will help you to develop your persuasive essay writing technique.
What skills or background knowledge will be needed?
As this is a skills based course there are no specific entry requirements for this course.
What is involved in A level study?
As you study this course you will:
-
understand the importance of examining knowledge and beliefs critically;
-
recognise, analyse and evaluate your own and others’ beliefs and knowledge claims in a variety of contexts;
-
evaluate reasoning of different kinds, including common and important types of reasoning;
-
learn how to write strong arguments;

What careers or HE courses could follow?
In addition to providing support for your other AS and A2 subjects, Critical Thinking is a good preparation for any career or course which requires you to communicate effectively with others and analyse the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems. If you are thinking of applying for courses in Medicine or Law you will find this course particularly helpful in preparing you for the entrance assessments.
