Local Sites of Historic Interest

BBC Hands on History is a website packed full of suggestions of where to go in the UK to explore local history "from the Stone Age to more recent times". Click on the region you are interested in and then follow the links to an interesting day out. Suitable for all year groups.

Year 7

In Year 7 we research Medieval castles.

Here are some that are not too far away which it would be worth you dragging a responsible adult along to some time soon.

Odiham Castle (just a ruin), Guildford Castle, Farnham Castle, Windsor Castle and the Tower of London are all worth a visit.

The following website will give you links to the castles.

We also study Cathedrals. The following cathedrals would be a good day out during the holidays or at the weekend.

Click on their names to visit their websites.

Winchester Cathedral, Portsmouth Cathedral, Chichester Cathedral, St George's Chapel (Windsor), Eton College Chapel, Westminster Abbey

Year 8

In Year 8 we study the Tudors and Stuarts.

You could pay a free visit to Waverley Abbey in Farnham to see the ruins of one of the Abbeys closed down by Henry VIII

Hampton Court Palace and The Globe Theatre are also not too far away

Banqueting House would be an excellent day out.

The National Portrait Gallery has a fantastic collection of portraits of Elizabeth I and others from your favourite periods in History.
