Students can choose to study A level ICT as a discrete subject.
Whilst the specification does not require study of ICT at GCSE, it is important that candidates have a good working knowledge of the use of ICT and of the main generic applications used in business today. The course uses a task driven approach to problem solving, and appropriate decision making, which relies on the effective use of Information and Communcations Technology.
Students will develop their understanding of the ways in which Information and Communications Technology affects both organisations and society in general. A key part of this will involve developing their understanding of the role that people, technology and systems play in the smooth running of organisations.
Assessment is based on four modules of work:
AS ICT
Info 1 - Practical problem solving in the Digital World
This unit looks at the practical use of ICT by identifying, designing, producing, testing, documenting and evaluating a number of solutions to different problems.
It is a unit which allows the student to develop an understanding of the ways in which specific items of information are used in a variety of different contexts. Its specific focus is on personal use of ICT.

Info 2 - Living in the Digital World
This unit looks at ICT systems and their components, the way users interact and the uses to which systems can be put, together with safety and security.
It aims to develop an understanding of data and information, data transfer, backup methods and systems and recovery.

A2 ICT
Info 3 - Use of ICT in the Digital World
This unit looks at new developements (future technology!), the information needs of organisations, ICT systems in general and the management of ICT. It will show how systems are developed and then introduced into large organisations. It will include aspects of training and support without which no system would survive.
Info 4 - Coursework: A project related to the Use of ICT in the Digital World
Candidates must identify and research a realistic problem for which there must be a real end-user. The project will be substantial, and cyclic - that is one which will be re-used periodically. They must make use of a range of advanced functionalities within an application. The most likely applications for this task being web design, a database activity or possibly a spreadsheet. It is also now possible to create a set of procedures for an ICT task such as backup for a department as an activity.
