GCSE

All students will study one Modern Language and we hope that many will study two to GCSE level.

Students can opt for either French or German or Spanish, or indeed French and German or French and Spanish to GCSE level. Students are only permitted to take the modern languages previously studied in Years 8 and 9. They are not able to start a new language in Year 10.

Many students feel more comfortable choosing the language they have studied for the longest period of time. On the other hand, many develop a greater interest in the languages they began at the beginning of Year 8.

Students should consider several factors carefully before making a final decision. Ability, interest and enjoyment of the subject are key areas but are only part of the overall picture. We wish to reassure all students that whichever language they choose, by the end of the GCSE course, everyone will have covered the same material in all three languages.
