German

German FlagExamining Board: AQA
We continue the course already begun in Year 8 by introducing topics of a varied, useful and interesting nature, all pertaining to the practical demands of GCSE.

It is expected at this stage, at the end of the two years, that pupils should reach a satisfactory degree of fluency and confidence, in order to be able to understand and elicit information on such subjects as telling the time, food and drink, the weather, holidays and travel. Elementary written tasks are practised and spoken skills are acquired through conversation and dialogues. A choice of magazines are offered to back up classroom knowledge and "JUMA" is sent free from Germany providing additional vocabulary and stimulus.

During Years 10 and 11 "Logo 4" is used. Pupils continue to build on their earlier knowledge and expand their range of vocabulary through more ambitious situations. Topics include clothes, life in and after school, the home environment, possible health problems abroad, motor repairs and emergencies. Formal letters are written and pupils learn to understand instructions and information. In addition to the textbook, there is a wide range of books provided for pupils to practise the skills required. Magazines in the target language are also available.

The examination format for German is the same as for French and Spanish. It consists of the same four skills areas of Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing.
