The GCSE specification for Religious Studies is composed of four papers:
PAPER 1: Christianity 1. Topics : Core Beliefs (The Apostles' Creed, the Trinity, Sin and Salvation, the Ten Commandments, the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus' summary of the Law); Special Days and Pilgrimage (Christian festivals, saints' days, Walsingham or Lourdes); Major divisions and interpretations (the major denominations, ecumenism, new developments).
PAPER 2: Christianity 2. Topics: Places and forms of worship (design, symbols and artefacts, public and private forms of worship); Religion in the faith community and in the family (rites of passage, the family, Cafod, religious communities); Sacred Writings (the Bible: it's importance and use in public and private worship).
PAPER 3: Perspectives on World Religions. Topics: Responsibility for the planet (origins of the world and life, people and animals, environmental issues); War, peace and human rights (Just War theory, pacifism, Universal Declaration of Human Rights); Prejudice and equality (biblical teaching on equality, racism, sexism, attitude towards other religions).
PAPER 4: Ethics. Topics: Religion and Human Relationships (roles of men and women, marriage, divorce, sexual relationships and contraception); Religion and medical ethics (abortion, fertility treatment, euthanasia, suicide, use of animals for research); Religion poverty and wealth (hunger, poverty and disease, concern for others, money, moral and immoral occupations).
