BAE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY CHALLENGE

Thursday 25th June, 2009

12 Year 10 girls studying Resistant Materials attended the BAE Systems Challenge day at the Aerospace centre in Farnborough on Monday 22 June.  The girls were divided into 2 teams and competed with 10 other teams from local schools.  Their task was to design and make a system required to rescue a Harrier that has made a forced landing in desert conditions.  They had a 1/24th scale aeroplane, a sandpit, toolkit, batteries, motors and engineers giving technical advice, to assist them with their solution to the problem.

The day began with a dynamic talk and demonstration of pilot survival equipment in the event of having to eject the aircraft over the sea.  The talk was given by test pilot, Bernard Scott, who has flown with the Red Arrows, tested Hawks, Harriers and Tornados and is currently involved with Nimrod.

The girls enjoyed the day and found the whole experience an interesting challenge.  One of our teams successfully earned the prize for best manufacture.  We came back to school with a great picture to hang in the school.
