SPORTS DAY
Wednesday 1st July, 2009
Miss Kelsey reports:The sporting calendar was brought to a close this week with our annual sports day. This year, sports day took on a more traditional approach with the inclusion of a track and field athletics programme. Sprinting, hurdling, jumping and throwing events took place alongside games of tennis and rounders. The objective of this new format was to create a visual spectacle that promoted team spirit, inter-house competition, maximal involvement and ease of viewing. With rounders and athletics both taking place on the field, there was lots of activity and atmosphere. The afternoon reached an exciting climax with the whole school assembled on the field to watch the 4x100m relay races which included some of the fastest sprinters and best athletes in the school. The race was comfortably won by More House with a team featuring 4 of our District Athletes.
The conclusion of the afternoon saw the VI Form compete with the staff in the tug of war. This was more competitive than many of the races and whilst the VI form enlisted extra recruits, the staff were busy putting on gloves for extra grip! Having lost the first of the three competitions, the VI form went onto to prove that there’s always strength in numbers with a team of 17 pulling on the rope against just 10 staff.
The final result was 2-1 to the VI form although we are still awaiting the results of the stewards enquiry!
Overall, it was a lovely afternoon. I would like to thank the Heads of House for organising the teams and all the staff and VI Form who helped to run the events so successfully. I would also like to congratulate all the girls who participated. There were some excellent results and they all took part with good spirit.
